Where to buy tickets to Machu Picchu in Aguas Calientes. Travelers from all over the world search for last-minute tickets to Machu Picchu daily, and the only way to get them is in the town of Machu Picchu, also known as Aguas Calientes. The Peruvian Ministry of Culture has an office very close to Plaza Manco Cápac (Inca Plaza), located to the left of the Inca, and sells 1,000 tickets daily, divided among the three circuits. If you are looking for last-minute tickets, you must go to the Ministry of Culture and wait in line.
Ticket sales for Machu Picchu in Aguas Calientes
To get to the town of Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes), you have several options, including:
• Train from the San Pedro, Poroy, or Ollantaytambo stations to Aguas Calientes. If your train station is in Poroy or Ollantaytambo, you must request private transportation from Cusco. Remember to arrive 30 minutes before boarding the train.
• The other route is via Hidroeléctrica. For this route, you must request a transfer from Cusco to Hidroeléctrica and then walk approximately 2.5 hours to Aguas Calientes. This route is the most economical, and several agencies offer shared transportation. Remember that the trip takes approximately 6 hours and the road is quite winding, with the last stretch being on the road. Travel is NOT RECOMMENDED during the rainy season.
Once in Machu Picchu Pueblo, head to Plaza Manco Cápac. On the left, you will find the Ministry of Culture of Peru. There, you must wait in line and purchase your ticket to Machu Picchu. They will provide you with the available ticket. During peak season, lines can be very long, and it may take up to two days to obtain a ticket. During the off-season, it will be much easier, but to avoid setbacks, it is recommended to book several months in advance, either online or through a travel agency.
